It's Pride Month: you don't have a choice, take some book recs goddamn it!
It's the season to read the best books on everyone's shelf.
It is the month of the year in which life looks more colorful. If you’re anything like me, you like a good queer book. We can’t help it that the gays just DO IT BETTER! In honor of this joyful month, I would like to recommend you some books for every occasion.
for your friend soulmate:
Juno Loves Legs by Karl Geary is tender story of friendship longing and adventures with the person you call home but aren’t blood related.
This book actually made me cry, which isn’t something I do often. The tales of childhood into adulthood are incredibly relatable. This is the perfect imperfect type of friendship we all search for.
for when you’re feeling gross but nostalgic:
Dogs of Summer by Andrea Abreu is a short delightfully grotesque story following two little girls with queer pining undertones.
I loved this book, I cannot recommend it enough. This is for us girlies that miss our girlhood and want to feel like we belong within its walls of femininity. This book does not shy away of all the gross things from childhood that never come up in conversation in our adulthood. This was jaw dropping but incredibly funny at the same time.
for when you’re missing campus:
We Do What We Do in the Dark by Michelle Hart is an incredible campus novel involving a student and her professor.
A book I wish I could read again for the first time. A stunning debut novel with wonderful prose. This book follows a student who becomes enticed by her professor who works out at her gym. This quickly becomes a story of grief, pleasure and longing.
for when you want to read an A24 film:
Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen puts the “K” in kooky. Do you like The Bachelor? Do you like slashers? Do you like King Kong? Do you wish King Kong was a girl? Do you wish The Bachelor was more idk… gay?
This was probably one of my easiest 5 star reads. At no point did I know was gonna happen, I like it that way.
for when you’re wishing you had a tail:
Chlorine by Jade Song is for the weirdos that don’t fit in and that don’t want to fit in.
I couldn’t help it. This was one of the last books I read recently. Carries a stunning portrayal of a high school swimmer who feels everything but ordinary. Convinced she belongs in the sea along with mermaids. This story follows the confusion of girlhood and adolescence with a slight magical realism approach.
for when you need a good laugh:
Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K Reilly is out now! This follows the life of two queer siblings navigating adulthood and family dynamics. A beautiful portrayal of family with laugh out loud dialogue.
If I am being honest, this was a vibe book. The vibes absolutely delivered. I cackled many times and quite honestly I loved & hated every character and I loved to hate every character.
if you’re curious to see a queer lolita story:
Antiquity by Hanna Johansoon is the queer version of Lolita. It is a messy story about a mother’s friend getting involved with her young daughter. It is a short novel centering around a story of grooming with a beautiful setting.
I read this book in one setting, I couldn’t help myself to grow curious of our main character’s obsession. This book also is recently published in English!
for when you’re feeling like having a threesome:
A Good Happy Girl by Marissa Higgins is a debut novel following Helen, a woman attempting to deal with her life struggles while also attempting to be in a captivating sexual relationship with an older lesbian couple.
This is for sure for the Melissa Broder fans, this book is not afraid of embracing the gross and darker themes of sex. The writing includes sensuality in its grossness and somehow manages to be informative.
for when you want enemies to lovers but make it historical fiction:
The Safekeep by Yael Van Der Wouden is a uniquely stunning novel about a messy queer relationship in the 60’s holding an incredibly thrilling prose.
This book GETS IT. I have nothing else to say. I am not a historical fiction girly but this is probably one of my all time favorite books. Out now!!
I hope I gave you a rec for your specific palette, or maybe you want to try something new. Some of these are quite literally my favorite books and I just need someone to talk to about them.
Please.
These are some great recs
